Oyo State Ido LGA Flood Crisis: Calls for Aid and Assistance

In Oyo State’s Ido local government area, hundreds of residents have suffered substantial property losses, estimated at millions of naira, due to severe flooding resulting from a heavy downpour on Friday.

The torrential rains on Friday evening devastated the livelihoods of numerous residents residing in towns and villages within the local government. Among the worst-hit areas were Omi Adio, Ido, and Apata.

According to reports from DAILY POST on Sunday, the Omi Adio market bore the brunt of the flood’s impact, with shops, vehicles, and buildings worth millions of naira severely affected.

Additionally, farmlands and fish ponds were completely washed away by the torrential downpour, causing significant harm to the local agricultural sector.

Festus Adesina, one of the affected farmers, expressed his distress to journalists, revealing that the flood had wreaked havoc on no less than 80 fish farms.

However, the losses he incurred amounted to over N10 million, wiping out his entire investment in fish farming.

Alhaja Alimot Adeleke, a trader also impacted by the flood, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians for assistance.

She disclosed that her losses included bags of garri, cassava flour, and other foodstuffs, all of which were washed away.

She further explained that her shop had been her means of supporting her three children after her husband’s passing. Struggling to come to terms with the scale of her loss, she sought help from others, feeling devastated and uncertain about her future.

Mr. Isiaka Kamorudeen, another affected fish farmer who had five fish ponds along Omi Adio and Ido town, shared his heartache over the situation.

He states that he had been preparing to harvest the fish after five months of care, only to find all the ponds emptied by the flood. To his dismay, some of the fish were even found on the main road, where youths were fighting over them. This tragic event will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on his life.

In summary, the recent torrential rainfall in Ido local government area has had severe consequences, leading to substantial property and livelihood losses for hundreds of residents in the affected towns and villages. The devastation caused by the flood is immense, particularly for farmers and traders who have lost their investments and sources of income.
