The attention of Kwara sports stakeholders has been drawn to the recent press release by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which makes baseless and unfounded allegations regarding the state of the Kwara State Stadium Complex. It is essential to address these accusations with facts and clarify the situation for the good people of Kwara State.

Firstly, the claim that the Kwara State Stadium Complex has been neglected and misused under Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s administration is entirely false and misleading. Governor Abdulrazaq has a remarkable track record of infrastructural development and has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to the advancement of sports and youth development in the state.

Key Achievements Under Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq:

Revitalization of Sports Infrastructure: The Abdulrazaq administration has undertaken significant renovation projects across the state, including the comprehensive upgrade of the Kwara State Stadium Complex. The ongoing work is aimed at ensuring the facility meets international standards, contrary to the PDP’s misleading narrative.

Transparent Use of Funds: The allegations of financial corruption are not only baseless but also a deliberate attempt to tarnish the governor’s reputation. The accusations from the Kwara Football Association (KFA) were propaganda against the sports commission and were later cleared by the Kwara State Revenue Service. The claim that N72 million was spent without visible changes is entirely false. Every expenditure on the stadium has been duly documented, with progress reports available for public scrutiny.

Promotion of Grassroots Sports: Governor Abdulrazaq has initiated numerous programs aimed at promoting grassroots sports and nurturing young talents in Kwara State. The administration’s efforts have been recognized nationally, leading to increased participation and success in various sports competitions.

Engagement with Stakeholders: Contrary to the PDP’s claims, the Kwara State Government has maintained a collaborative relationship with the Kwara Football Association (KFA) and other stakeholders. Regular consultations and engagements ensure that all concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.

Achievements of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq in Sports Development:

Purchase of NPFL Slot: Secured a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) slot for Kwara United after the previous administration’s relegation.

Construction of International Standard Facilities: Built an international standard squash court and table tennis court, both highly acclaimed.

Road Renovation: Renovated the transportation road from the stadium gate to the end inside Kwara Football Academy.

Upgrading of Kwara Football Academy: Renovated hostels, dining areas, and medical buildings at the Kwara Football Academy.

Swimming Pool Renovation: Upgraded the swimming pool facility.

Indoor Sports Complex Renovation: Ongoing total renovation of the Kwara State Sports Indoor Complex to contemporary standards.

Steady Salaries for Kwara United: Ensured regular payment of salaries to Kwara United players and staff.

Partnerships for Sports Development: Actively partnered with initiatives aimed at the development of sports in the state.

Addressing Specific Allegations:

Use of Stadium for Political Rallies: The assertion that the stadium’s Main Bowl has been used irresponsibly for political rallies is a gross exaggeration. According to the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bola Mogaji, the stadium has not been used for political rallies under this administration. Even if it is true, It is a public facility hosting various events, including sports, cultural, and political activities, all managed with utmost care to preserve its condition.

Routine Maintenance: The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has listed several stadia, including the Kwara State Stadium, for routine maintenance at the end of the season. This is a standard directive aimed at ensuring that minor repairs and upgrades are made to maintain top-tier league standards. This does not imply that the entire stadium is in a deplorable condition.

Constructive Criticism:

Criticism is not inherently bad, but it should be objective and constructive. However, the writer of the PDP’s article does not understand sports activities to the level required to specify the aspect of the stadium being criticized. Is it the pitch, the gate, or another part? A thorough investigation should precede accusations to avoid appearing baseless or immature.

Furthermore, we advise the PDP not to cause conflict or enmity between the Kwara Football Association and the Kwara State Government. The focus should be on development, not on gaining power through propaganda. It is also important for the PDP to avoid giving Kwara State a bad image by antagonizing the present administration.

We appreciate the Kwara State Government under the leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for the commitment, transparency, accountability, and the development of sports infrastructure in the state. We urge the PDP to desist from spreading misinformation and instead focus on constructive engagement for the betterment of Kwara State.
