Sexual Harassment: UNICAL Suspends Dean of Faculty of Law

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has taken action by suspending Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, today, due to alleged violations of the institution’s laws and policies (Sexual harassment).

This decision follows recent protests by law students who accused the dean of sexual harassment.

In a statement from the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, the suspension, effective from August 17, 2023, was prompted by the dean’s unsatisfactory response to a query issued by the University Management.

However, the Vice-Chancellor reviewed the response and found it insufficient, leading to the decision to relieve Prof. Ndifon of his position as Dean and place him on suspension.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time Prof. Ndifon has faced such allegations. In 2015, he was suspended for a similar issue, but he managed to clear his name after a legal dispute.

As the investigation into these allegations unfolds, Prof. Ndifon is required to hand over all University property and responsibilities to the Sub-Dean of the Faculty before leaving his post.

Nevertheless, he is also expected to stay away from the University premises, except when summoned by the panel overseeing the investigation.

Further details will be provided as the situation develops.
