Students injured as NSCDC officers open fire at Abuja school

Two students of Senior Secondary School, Life Camp, were shot and wounded by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Wednesday morning, sparking a violent protest by their classmates.

The incident happened around 11.20am on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, when the NSCDC officers, who were deployed to the school to provide security during an examination, allegedly fired at the students for unknown reasons.

The PRISTINEGIST learnt that the injured students, whose names were not disclosed, were rushed to the Gwarinpa Hospital for treatment, while the angry students vandalised three NSCDC patrol vehicles parked on the school premises.

The Nigeria Police Force, which confirmed the incident, said it had arrested and detained the three NSCDC officers involved in the shooting, and launched an investigation into the matter.

The FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, told our correspondent that the police had restored peace and order in the area, and assured the public that justice would be done.

She said, “The incident happened, but our operatives intervened in time to restore law and order, and the environment is now peaceful. Two injured students are currently receiving treatment, and the CP, Haruna Garba has ordered the commencement of an investigation into the incident.”

The FCT Command of the NSCDC, however, has not issued any statement on the incident, and its spokesperson, Comfort Okomanyi, said she was indisposed and could not comment on the matter.

She said, “I’m sorry, I’m currently indisposed. However, I’ll reach out to the command for an update on the matter, and I’ll get back to you.”
