Tech Upgrade at Airport: Home Delivery Of Passports Begins In June – Minister

In a significant leap towards modernizing Nigeria’s aviation security, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, unveiled the new electronic gates (e-gates) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s latest terminal in Abuja. The inspection on Friday marked a milestone in the government’s efforts to streamline airport operations and enhance passenger experience.

However, the minister highlighted a critical hurdle—the delay in the rollout of home delivery services for Nigerians abroad, attributing it to the absence of robust data centres. Addressing the diaspora community, he assured that the home delivery service would kick off in the United States and the United Kingdom following successful preliminary tests.

Tunji-Ojo expressed a commitment to long-term solutions over temporary fixes, emphasizing the construction of a new data centre to safeguard the integrity of national data and security. “It is a matter of national pride that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), at 61 years of age, should be the sovereign custodian of Nigerian biometric data, rather than relying on external entities,” he declared.

The minister’s statement reflects a broader initiative to assert Nigeria’s sovereignty over its data and to bolster the country’s infrastructure in line with global standards. As the e-gates stand ready for inauguration, the nation watches with anticipation for the next steps in this technological evolution.
