President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada have had a lengthy and meaningful conversation on the phone, according to Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential media and publicity adviser. He briefed the press on Wednesday in Abuja about the call.

Ngelale said that the two leaders discussed the recent coup in Gabon that ousted President Ali Bongo and the crisis in Niger Republic. They agreed that constitutional democracy should be upheld and defended in Africa.

He also said that they acknowledged the contributions of Africans in the Diaspora to the global society and economy, and urged the international community to support democratic development in Africa for the benefit of all Africans.

Ngelale said: “The president and the prime minister had a substantive and extended discussion on the situation in Gabon and Niger Republic. They both stressed the importance of constitutional democratic governance on the continent as a key priority. They also recognized the impact of Africans living abroad on the world’s politics and economy, and called for the advancement of democracy in Africa for the sake of its economic prosperity.

“The president will continue to engage with other heads of state, both within and outside Africa, to promote peace and stability on the continent. These engagements are ongoing.”
