WAEC Withholds Over 7000 Results For Malpractice, Releases Others

LAGOS, Nigeria – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, except for 7,192 candidates whose results were withheld for alleged examination malpractice.

The Council announced this in a statement signed by its acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, on Tuesday. According to the statement, the withheld results represent 8.89% of the total number of 80,904 candidates that sat the examination across Nigeria.

The statement said the cases of malpractice were being investigated and the reports would be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for consideration. It added that the Committee’s decisions would be communicated directly to the affected candidates at the end of the investigations.

The statement also revealed that out of the 78,419 candidates whose results were fully processed and released, 46,267 candidates, representing 57.19%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics).

It further stated that 35,830 candidates, representing 44.29%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Of this number, 17,631 candidates, representing 49.21%, were males, while 18,199 candidates, representing 50.79%, were females.

The statement noted that there was a marginal increase of 2.13% in the performance of candidates who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, compared to the previous two editions of the examination.

The statement explained that the WASSCE for private candidates was a remedial examination for candidates who wanted to remedy their existing deficiencies, and that they were not compelled to sit for all the subjects they registered for.

The statement said the examination was conducted in Nigeria between Friday, October 27, 2023 and Wednesday, December 20, 2023, and that the coordination of examiners and marking of candidates’ scripts were carried out at seven marking venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna and Jos.

The statement advised candidates who sat the examination to check their results online using the result checker PIN and serial number on their smart identity cards.
