Former Manchester United and England defender, Wes Brown, has been declared bankrupt.

His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a bankruptcy petition against the former England international at the end of February 2023.

The action was later confirmed by the High Court on April 12, and the order was made public earlier this week.

The 43-year-old Brown earned roughly £50,000 a week while playing in the Premier League.

His bankruptcy comes a year after he split from his wife Leanne, who was a reality TV star on the show ‘Real Housewives of Cheshire.’

The couple, who had tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at Peckforton Castle near Tarporley, Cheshire, in 2009, share three children, Halle, Lilia, and Lola.

According to the report, Wes reportedly moved out of the family home he shared with Leanne and their children.

However, the reason for his financial crisis is yet to be specified.

Brown’s football career began at Manchester United, where he spent 15 seasons, winning several major honours including the Premier League and the Champions League.

While at United, he reportedly made about 300 appearances and was among the team’s key defenders.

After leaving United in 2011, he played for Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, and Kerala Blasters but retired from football in 2018.

Brown entered the football management business after retiring and joined former United teammate, Phil Neville, to be part of the England Women’s National Team’s backroom staff.

However, he left the team amid a controversy following his conviction for failing to tell police who was driving his car when it was caught speeding.

Wes Brown’s fans and the football community have been seen reacting to the news with mixed reactions, with some expressing sympathy for the former football star, and wishing him well.

Others however, wonder how a former Premier League player and football star could end up bankrupt.
